I used to travel a decent amount overseas prior to COVID for fieldwork, workshops and conferences and have been thinking a lot about how this will look as we move forward... As such, it will be great to read about your experiences Tim. I feel like travel may well be in flux for the next 6-12 months yet but it is still important to document what is going on now, particularly the European vs Australian experience. Wishing you all the best for your (mini)move.

Thanks, Marika, that's much appreciated. And yes, that's exactly what I'm hoping this page can be, somewhere people can get a sense of how things work in this new normal and what they are like elsewhere.

This is great, Tim. I've been thinking of a newsletter similar to this when we move to the Netherlands so I can have a means to keep close to Australian friends. I'll be watching how this works with interest.

You say this won't be a travelogue, but I hope you'll reconsider that at least to an extent. I bet I'm not alone among your friends to be utterly craving travel. If we can do a little of that vicariously through you, it'd be a joy. And photos! Can you post photos on this platform? Hell, right now I'd be happy just to look at a photo of airline food on a retractable tray.

Anyway, great decision. Missing out on this crucial phase of Noah's life is too sad a thought. Yes, scary to be going, for a dozen different reasons, but wise. I'm really happy for you all and will read your posts with fascination.

Cheers,

Margaret

I've been in two minds about the travelogue thing. I didn't want to do a Dolly Downer and feel like I was rubbing people's noses in it. But maybe there is a way. Will certainly include photos of airports, planes etc because that is interesting for people to see. I suspect how I use the newsletter will evolve, but it is good to try and make notes on the social/political aspect of all this, before we all forget. Truth is, we may well extend, though I'm not saying this out loud yet. One, we might be forced to. But also, Tanya's firm has a London office, so if Noah extended, we could fairly easily decamp for a while. Then we can visit the Netherlands! But who knows! Anyway, like I said, good luck with your plans and please do a newsletter! On another matter, I have a novel with an agent atm, who asked to see it, and am working on another, which is what I will work on in France. Hopefully, he will take it on and get it published, and I like the idea of doing that from overseas. Anyway, fingers crossed!

Wouldn't that be wonderful! Two Australian novelist emigrés! Congratulations on getting the novel in front of an agent's eyeballs. That's brilliant. I'm determined to get my next novel submitted to publishers well before we leave. I hope I'll have a contract before we fly out. This one is partly set in the Netherlands and I'm leaving it open-ended to write a sequel set entirely there. Here's to literary successes!

(I don't think, by the way, anyone would confuse your sharing of your experiences with Lord D's approach.)

You've obviously never seen my fishnets. I'm sure some nice publisher will snap yours up, but some firsthand Netherlands experience is a great idea. Let's hope we both end up vying for shelf space!

Great to hear you're writing a novel! A new direction? Maybe something you've been thinking about for a while? Yes, please post photos of any of those beautiful places you visit in Provence - I want to feel some nostalgia as there's not much else to feel here at the moment besides stuck.
